is. The younger nymphs
(L1-L2) have a higher mortality rate than do nymphs who have survived to
the L3-L4 instar (or molt). If a mantis arrives dead, we will refund the
cost of the mantis to you.
There are 4 sizes of feeder insects for feeding your mantis. They are,
in order of size from smallest to largest: Melanogaster fruit flies,
hydei fruit flies, musca domestica houseflies, and blue bottle flies. Be
sure to have the correct sized food ready for your mantis.

Details: They
are known as the boxer mantis, and a small fellow at that. From the
Sudan and Mali. They only reach 5/8 of an inch. They are brown in color
and the females get really fat when adults. You will have to
look close to find them when small, because they curl up in a little
ball! They are a
docile mantis and will get in the way when being fed. Not much scares
them. They are called boxer because of the way their arms punch out in
front of them when walking. This species is kept as a pet only and can
not be released in the U. S. A good container for them is the

pretty saddle as her wings do not extend all the way to her back end and
is where she gets her common name! The female gets around 3". They are a
mottled brown and have an excellent appetite. They originate from

Phyllocrania Paradoxa (Ghost) mantis is originally from Asia &
Madagascar. The Ghost mantis is sought after by newbie's to the
hobby and veterans alike. This species is kept as a pet only and can not

about 2". Their color is either multi green,
brown, dark brown almost black & a light beige. They are a docile mantis

Details: A
small mantis, not quite reaching 2", but very robust! The
females have a very pretty lacy underwing. They are called commonly the
#9 mantis, due to the design on their wings. The male is almost the same
size as the female, only 1/4" smaller. They in my opinion do not have a
big appetite. The female lays quite a long ootheca, about 2 times
her length. This species is kept as a pet only and can not be released

and very much the king of the
forest! The males are
smaller and more slender then the females. They come in a variety
of browns, from light to dark. When on the floor of the forest they
resemble a leaf so much one would have to look more than once to realize

I like to call this the Q mantis, because
it appears to have a Q on its wings. It is a small mantis reaching only
an inch an a half at the most. It closely resembles the P.
Wahlbergii and is in fact closely related. The
females have a lacy look to their wings. They eat smaller flies and
crickets, occasionally taking mealworms and moths. Their colors are
mainly white and green with some gold and black mixed in.

Details: If
you like the way an ant looks this is the mantis for you. As nymphs you
would have a hard time telling them apart. The females are about 3/4"
long when adult, with the male reaching 1/2". They will eat almost
anything you offer them, and spend a lot of time looking up. They run
very fast and will fly if given the chance. The female will hover over
her egg case for a day or so after laying. They are a evergreen green
with wings that have a touch of brown running along the middle of them.

Details: A spunky small mantis reaching only 1 1/4" that is long lived, I still have the original females (almost 1 year old) that are laying while the offspring are laying too. The Arizona Unicorn mantis is very
similar to the Texas Unicorn mantis, the difference being a bit smaller
in size and more pronounced lobes on the legs. They eat a little better
than the Texas too & not as shy. This species can be released in the U.

The Tenodera Aridifolia Sinensis
(Chinese) mantis is originally from China and brought here in 1895 for
crop insect control. The Chinese mantis is still considered to be
beneficial for insect control in backyard gardens today, and along with
a few others can be released all over the U.S. Size is a whopping 6" and
said to be the largest in N. America. Their color is either green or
brown with green along the underside of its wings. They will eat
anything they are able to grab, along with insects, baby frogs, small
fish, birds and the occasional baby mice may fall prey to them
especially because at night they are most active. Housing size for
the Chinese is 18" x 9".

Originates in Southern Europe, introduced into N. America in 1899 on a
shipment of plants. Size ranges from 2 1/2" to 3", colors range from tan
to green. This is a docile mantis compared to other mantis. This mantis
is beneficial in the garden and is allowed to be released in our
environment. Housing size for the European is approximately 8" x
5".
