Mantis Place offers several sizes of individual nymph containers. For multiple group housing, see Mantis Nursery.
Once the nymphs need separate housing (due to cannibalism), we have
several options in our insect cup line. The closer the food is to the
nymph, the better for survival. This is one of the reasons you don’t put
a nymph in a 32 ounce cup that is 5.75 inches tall. The following is a
list of our 4.5 inch insect cups that work for nymphs: Some customers
have also requested the larger 32 oz cup, so we are offering it too!
8 ounce 1.75 " tall
12 ounce 2.50 " tall
16 ounce 3.00 " tall
24 ounce 4.25 " tall
32 ounce 5.75 " tall
Actually, stacking 12 of our 8 oz. insect cups 2 high will take up the
same room as 12 of the
plastic drinking cups with the cloth and rubber band setup, and are MUCH
easier to manage. On the Mantis nymph container you order, we cut a
hole in the cloth lid that fits a small (1-1/8 inch round) foam stopper.
So not only do you contain the insects better, but you never have to
take the lid off to feed or mist. As the nymphs grow, graduate them to
the next size cup.
You also can use
Excelsior or
sphagnum moss to give the feeders an “opportunity”
to get in reach of the nymph.
To encourage you to try a different way to raise solitary nymphs, Mantis
Place will cut the hole in the cloth lid for free, you just buy the
small foam stopper for 40 cents a piece.
